Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa to visit Aspen Pharmaceutical facility in Port Elizabeth, Thursday 14 April 2016
Port Elizabeth - Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa, supported by Minister of Health. Dr. Aaron Motsoaledi will tomorrow, Thursday 14 April 2016 visit the Aspen Pharmaceutical flagship facility in Port Elizabeth.
Deputy President Ramaphosa will visit the Aspen facility in his capacity as the Chairperson of the South African National AIDS Council (SANAC).
The Port Elizabeth Aspen facility was the site of the development of the first generic ARV in South Africa. African generic ARV were pioneered at this site and has helped in accelerating the ability of South Africa to roll out the country’s widely acclaimed ARV programme.
The Aspen Port Elizabeth facility is the largest pharmaceutical site in both the African continent and the Southern Hemisphere. It currently employs a total of 1400 employees in the area. It is also the facility which first received the United Status’s Food and Drug Administration approval in 2004 for the first generic antiretrovirals outside of the USA.
