Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa to be conferred with an Honorary Doctorate in Law by the University of Venda

Thohoyandou - Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa will tomorrow, Friday 23 September 2016, visit the University of Venda in Thohoyandou, Limpopo Province where he will be conferred with an honorary doctorate in law.

The Council and the Senate of the University of Venda agreed to confer the honorary doctorate on the Deputy President for “his role in overseeing the drafting of South Africa’s first democratic constitution.”

Deputy President Ramaphosa previously served as a Chancellor of the University of Venda from 1997-2009. He also served as University of Venda’s Special Ambassador where he launched a successful R1 billion capital projects campaign that was utilised for infrastructural development at the university.

Deputy President Ramaphosa is himself a graduate of law from the University of South Africa (UNISA) following his expulsion from the University of the North (Turfloop)  for political activism which arose from the organisation of the pro-Frelimo rallies in 1974 under the banner the then South African Students Organisation (SASO).

The University of Venda will this year, 2016, be hosting a graduation ceremony for 456 students who qualified in various academic fields including among others agriculture, education, natural sciences, law, management sciences and environmental  sciences.
