Deputy President Mabuza concludes Consultative Meeting of Parties in South Sudan
Deputy President Mabuza has concluded and adjourned a Consultative Meeting of Parties on the determination of the number of States and their Boundaries. Deputy President co-facilitated the meeting with H.E. Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka, Kenya Special Envoy to South Sudan, H.E. Amb Jamal El Sheikh, Sudan Special Envoy to South Sudan, H.E. Betty Bigombe, Senior Advisor to the President of Uganda on South Sudan as well as H.E. Ambassador Ismail Wais, IGAD Special Envoy to South Sudan.
The meeting which began in December 2019 was adjourned after parties could not reach an agreement on the number of states as one of the outstanding issues towards the formation of the Revitalised Transitional Government of National Unity.
The facilitators later proposed an arbitrated mechanism to break the impasse as the parties could not reach an agreement. Parties ultimately could not reach a consensus on the proposed arbitrated mechanism.
“Whereas the parties have failed to find common ground, we are encouraged that they remain committed to peace and in forming the Revitalised Transitional Government of National Unity by the end of the extended period, as the people of South Sudan want peace and prosperity”, said Deputy President David Mabuza.
The Special Envoys will therefore table the final report of the meeting to the IGAD Council of Ministers and Summit.
